CNU Sailing

Christopher Newport University’s sailing team first started out as a club sport in 1974. Mr. and Mrs. Webb helped the team acquire a full fleet of Ghost 13 dinghies. The Southern Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (SAISA) conference in the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) accepted this club team. In 1984, the university president James C. Windsor granted the sailing club varsity status. Also, in 1984, the CNSF helped purchase a new fleet of lasers for the sailing team, found a part-time coach for the team, and secured a new sailing venue out of Warwick Yacht and Country Club.

In 1992, the new full-time head coach, Dan Winters, worked with the CNSF for the next decade to purchase a fleet of collegiate FJs and then a fleet of collegiate 420s, which led the sailing team to compete in a more competitive conference, Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association (MAISA). Again, with the help of the CNSF, the team was able to move from Warwick Yacht to their very own sailing center out of Menchville Marina.

Now in 2022, Dan Winter has retired from coaching and is serving on the CNSF Board of Directors and the CNU Sailing Team is on their third full-time head coach, Dreugh Phillips. Due to bulkhead issues, CNU Sailing Team has moved their operations out of Youth Sailing Virginia in Fort Monroe.
